Editor verdict
A dense, midweight cotton tee that landed within 0.6 cm of the listed chart and kept its screen print through ten cold washes; one warm tumble dry crazed the black unit. Fit above size L is unproven.

Streetwear buyers who will check the chart instead of trusting a letter size, wash cold and line dry, and consolidate several pieces into one parcel to dilute shipping and handling.
Buyers who machine dry their tees, want a printed care or fibre label in the garment, need proven fit above size L, or expect a chemical-safety guarantee we could not lab-test.
Two units, one Rotterdam bench, ten cold washes and one deliberate tumble-dry cycle. We ordered the Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection from the bbd-buy catalog so this page could be written from a parcel rather than from listing copy: the order log, the flat measurements, the swatch weights, the collar and print checks, and the landed cost to a Dutch doorstep.

Outer box, packaging and labels
The parcel arrived as a plain brown corrugated carton, 28 × 20 × 6 cm, sealed with one continuous run of clear tape and carrying no branding on the outside. Inside sat a single grey poly mailer holding both tees, each folded in its own clear zip bag. Packed weight on our calibrated scale: 512 g. We photographed the outer box from four angles, the tape seam, the mailer, both bags and the neck label of each unit before unrolling anything.
Label inventory: each tee carries a woven neck label and a printed size tag. Neither unit carried a printed fibre-content or care label, and we found no country-of-origin marking on either piece. That leaves the listing's 100% cotton, 250–300 gsm specification as the listing's claim, which is why we went at it with a steel tape and a scale instead.
Flat measurements, size by size
We let both units rest 24 hours out of the bag, then measured flat with a steel tape, twice per dimension. The S, M and XXL columns are the supplier chart as published in the listing; the L and XL columns carry our own readings.
| Size | Half-chest: listed / measured | Body length: listed / measured | Shoulder: listed / measured | Sleeve: listed / measured |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | 50 / chart only | 68 / chart only | 46 / chart only | 20 / chart only |
| M | 52.5 / chart only | 70 / chart only | 48 / chart only | 21 / chart only |
| L | 55 / 55.3 | 72 / 72.4 | 50 / 50.1 | 22 / 22.3 |
| XL | 57.5 / 57.6 | 74 / 74.1 | 52 / 52.0 | 23 / 23.2 |
| XXL | 60 / chart only | 76 / chart only | 54 / chart only | 24 / chart only |
| Stated tolerance | 2–3 cm, per the listing | |||
All values in centimetres. The largest gap between our reading and the chart on the two units was 0.4 cm, comfortably inside the stated 2–3 cm tolerance. Doubling the flat half-chest gives a garment circumference of about 110.6 cm on the L and 115.2 cm on the XL — fabric circumference, not a body measurement. The front print panel on the L measured 26.5 × 20.0 cm.
Cotton weight and hand feel
Whole-garment weights after the wash cycle: 208 g for the L, 216 g for the XL. To get at areal density we cut a 10 × 10 cm swatch from the inside of the hem of each unit once washing was finished: 26.1 g on the white/red L and 25.4 g on the black/purple XL, which works out at 261 gsm and 254 gsm. Both sit inside the listing's 250–300 gsm band, and because the swatches came from washed panels they read on the high side of what our method can support, not the low side.
Hand feel, logged by three of us handling the dried units: a smooth, dry surface with light body, a faint cool slickness on the black piece, and enough spring in the collar rib to hold its shape on the bench. Our bench notes on hand feel are subjective; we logged no instrument readings for breathability or moisture handling, so breathable stays a listing word rather than our finding. A loose fibre from the cut hem burned with a paper-like smell and left fine grey ash, which is consistent with cotton and no substitute for fibre analysis.
Collar and print after ten cold washes
- Washed inside out on a 30 °C cotton cycle with mild liquid detergent, no softener, no bleach.
- Line dried indoors, away from direct sun, between cycles.
- Photographed flat before every cycle and compared against the day-one photo.
- Neck rib opening measured flat before cycle one and after cycle ten.
Results: the neck rib opening went from 18.6 cm to 19.1 cm, a 0.5 cm change with no rippling or waviness along the rib. Under a 10× loupe we found no cracking, flaking or lifting along the print edge on either unit after ten cycles. On the white/red piece the red ink read slightly lighter next to the day-one photograph from roughly the sixth wash onward — a side-by-side visual comparison, not a colour-meter reading.
Then the deliberate abuse cycle. After wash ten we gave the black/purple XL one warm 40-minute tumble-dry run in a domestic dryer. Fine crazing appeared along the printed panel edge, visible in raking light at arm's length. The white/red unit was never machine dried and its print finished the fortnight clean. One dry cycle is not a lifecycle test, but it did reproduce the mechanism owners describe.
Fit on our bench
The editor who ordered the collection, Priya Raman, is 168 cm and 62 kg and normally wears a size M. In the L she had about 18 cm of ease across the chest (92 cm body measurement against a 110.6 cm garment circumference), a roomy body and a shoulder seam sitting past her shoulder point; she would have taken the M for a cleaner line. A second tester, 180 cm and 88 kg, wore the XL: about 7 cm of ease across the chest (108 cm against 115.2 cm), which he called slightly snug but wearable, with the hem landing just below the hip and no riding up while standing or sitting.
Our coverage stops there. S, M and XXL appear here as chart figures, and the two colourways we handled are the D167 white/red and D167 black/purple out of the listing's D167, D168, D115, D169, D170, D081, D097 and D109 groups, plus black1, black2, black3 and white1. Print behaviour and panel placement can differ between colourways, so read the print findings as specific to the two pieces on our bench.
Landed cost to the Netherlands
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| D167 white/red, size L | $7.31 ≈ €6.73 |
| D167 black/purple, size XL | $7.31 ≈ €6.73 |
| China domestic shipping to agent warehouse | ¥8 ≈ €1.03 |
| Agent service fee | ¥15 ≈ €1.93 |
| EU line shipping, billed 0.6 kg | ¥96 ≈ €12.37 |
| Dutch import VAT, 21% on goods plus line shipping | €5.42 |
| Clearance and handling fee, PostNL | €4.00 |
| Total for the two-piece parcel | €38.20, or €19.10 per tee |
Conversion logged on the order date: $1 = €0.92, ¥1 = $0.14. Per tee, that is roughly 2.8× the $7.31 sticker. A two-garment parcel is close to the worst case, because line shipping and the handling fee are charged per parcel rather than per piece; the per-tee figure falls as you add pieces to the same shipment.
Owner reports we checked against our log
Four outside data points shaped our bench plan, and our results split between confirmed, echoed and untouched.
My Bape shirts never crack. Had em for years. I wash on cold and hang em up. Never dry because the heat makes the screen print crack up
A long-time owner on r/bapeheads, and the advice our ten-cycle protocol was built around. Ten cold washes and line drying left our prints clean; the dry-cycle half of that warning is the part our log adds to.
I would call it Asian sizing. I normally wear XL with 5.11 and Gap tees. When it comes to Evisu and Bathing Ape I go XXL.
Our flat numbers came in on the listed chart for L and XL, which supports the true-to-size camp; the disagreement in the threads is really about ease, not chart accuracy. A separate r/bapeheads thread puts it the other way: a buyer there calls the tees true to size and says to size up only when you sit between two sizes. Both readings are compatible with what we measured, and with the 2–3 cm tolerance the listing itself states.
This is the XL ... from a fit standpoint I think it's a bit too snug, man.
A video reviewer around 180 cm and 88 kg, which is the same complaint our own taller tester raised at XL in our fit check.
The material has changed — the cotton used to feel slightly coarse, now it feels like Uniqlo U's Airism short-sleeve: a little slick, a little cool. Now made in China.
A retail buyer's claim about current production, translated from Chinese. Our units carried no origin marking, so we can neither confirm nor contradict the country. Our dried panels did feel smooth rather than coarse, which is at least compatible with the observation.
A faint formaldehyde smell came off the garment. I never thought a Bape piece would have a smell. A smell is something I really can't accept.
The same buyer, on unbagging. Our odour check was a bench sniff test with no chemical analysis behind it, so this one sits outside what our log can speak to.
Limits of this bench log
- Fibre content: 100% cotton is the listing's specification. A burn check on a hem fibre is suggestive only, and neither unit shipped with a care or fibre label.
- Odour: both units gave off a faint new-garment smell when unbagged that aired out within about 30 minutes and was gone after one cold wash. That is a sniff test, and nothing more technical backs it.
- Wash life: ten cold cycles and one warm dry cycle. Wear beyond that, and colour behaviour beyond our day-one photo comparisons, sit outside the log.
- Coverage: two colourways, two sizes, one print group. The other colourways, the remaining sizes and retail production runs are unrepresented here.
How the 4.2 / 5 score was built
| Component | Score | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Order, packaging and delivery | 4.5 / 5 | Nine-day door-to-door transit inside the quoted window, clean outer box, both pieces intact. |
| Flat measurements against the listed chart | 4.5 / 5 | Largest deviation 0.4 cm on the two units, well inside the stated 2–3 cm tolerance. |
| Cotton weight and hand feel | 4.0 / 5 | Post-wash swatches of 261 gsm and 254 gsm, inside the band but near its floor; smooth hand feel. |
| Collar and print after ten cold washes | 4.5 / 5 | 0.5 cm rib stretch, no cracking or lifting under a 10× loupe; slight ink dulling on the red. |
| Fit documentation and size coverage | 3.5 / 5 | No care or fibre label, one print group sampled, and ease tight at XL for a larger build. |
| Overall | 4.2 / 5 | Mean of the five components, each scored on its own. |
Retest date: September 2027. Under our 12-month policy we will repeat the same steps on a fresh unit — same flat measurements, the same ten cold washes, the same single warm dry cycle — and the score moves only if the repeat run disagrees with this one.
