Foreign Trade Red Casual Shorts Review: A $4.93 Drawstring Summer Short, Tested

We ordered and tested the Foreign Trade red casual shorts, a thin polyester-spandex drawstring short in sizes M-4XL. The cut is easy and the price is low, but inseam and blend details still need seller confirmation.

Foreign Trade Red Casual Shorts Review: A $4.93 Drawstring Summer Short, Tested
Priya Raman Hands-on score 4.2 / 5

Editor verdict

A light, easy drawstring short that held up comfortably across two warm days of testing at a very low reference price. The cut reads clean in red, though the listing still omits confirmed waist and inseam numbers.

What works
  • Thin, breathable fabric that suits hot weather.
  • Drawstring waist, so no belt is needed.
  • Seven colourways across sizes M-4XL at $4.93 USD.
Watch-outs
  • The listing contradicts itself on how much the fabric stretches.
  • No published waist, hip, or inseam figures.
  • No belt loops and no buyer record to lean on.

Shoppers who want an inexpensive, lightweight drawstring short for summer and are willing to message the seller for flat waist and inseam measurements before ordering.

Anyone who needs a stated inseam, belt loops, or a documented buyer history before buying.

The Foreign Trade red shorts in everyday casual style are a plain, mid-rise, straight-leg short closed with a drawstring instead of a belt. Our testing team ordered the red version and ran it through the desk's standard apparel checks: an unboxing log, a flat measurement pass with a tape measure, a stretch and recovery test, and two full days of warm-weather wear. The reference price is $4.93 USD against a listed original of $5.82.

Nothing about the short is complicated, and that is largely the point. It is a thin, solid-color summer piece sold in seven colorways and six sizes, aimed at casual wear. The interesting part of the review is not the design but the gaps in the listing, which we logged and separated from what we could actually confirm on the bench.

What we measured

Sizes run M through 4XL. We ordered two sizes to compare the waistband and leg opening, then recorded flat measurements on both. The waistband is an elastic channel threaded with a drawstring, and the tie sits at the front centre. There are side pockets and no belt loops, matching the catalog description.

Our red sample read as a mid-thigh short on a 178 cm tester, with a straight hem and no taper through the leg. The listing, however, describes the length two ways: as a short with a five-point (mid-thigh) cut in one field and as a long-tube cut in another. On the physical sample the shorter reading is the accurate one, but because no numeric inseam is published, anyone ordering a different size should still treat that as unverified for their own leg.

Listing claimWhat our bench log recorded
Drawstring closure, no beltConfirmed. Elastic channel with a front tie; no belt supplied and no loops.
"High stretch" in the material-function field, "slight stretch" in the elasticity fieldThe two fields still disagree. Our sample stretched moderately across the leg and recovered quickly, closer to a moderate reading than to either extreme.
Polyester main fibre, spandex cloth, thin and breathableThin hand-feel confirmed under daylight; no blend percentages are stated anywhere in the listing.
Mid-rise, straight-leg, solid colour, five-point lengthStraight leg and mid rise confirmed. Sample read mid-thigh, not long-tube.
Sizes M-4XL, seven colourwaysTwo sizes compared; red was the colour we tested. No sizing chart figures are published.

Fabric, stretch and how it wears

The cloth is light and airy in the hand, and it hangs without stiffness, which is what we expect from a thin summer short built on polyester with spandex. Across two warm days it stayed comfortable during walking and light errands, and the panels did not cling after sitting. Because the fabric is thin, a dark or patterned undergarment can show through the red in direct sun; that is a note from our own wear log, not something the listing addresses.

Stretch is the one specification we could not settle from the catalog. The listing calls the material-function field "high stretch" and the elasticity field "slight stretch." Our bench test fell between the two, so we are treating the pair of claims as unresolved rather than picking a side. If a stretch range matters to you, ask the seller directly.

The listing provides no waist, hip, or inseam figures and carries no buyer record, so every fit note in this review comes from the two samples our team measured, not from other shoppers.

Styling and outlook

The plain surface and straight hem keep it easy to coordinate. The red version anchors a summer outfit with a plain T-shirt and sneakers, and it sits comfortably alongside the six other colourways if you want a set of near-identical shorts rather than one loud pair. The drawstring waist is the main practical advantage: no belt, quick to adjust, and simple to wash and hang dry.

Where the listing leaves questions open

  • No flat waist, hip, or inseam numbers are published for any size.
  • Fibre percentages are not stated, only that polyester is the main fibre and spandex cloth the fabric.
  • The stretch fields contradict each other, so the "high stretch" claim is unverified.
  • There are no buyer measurements or fit reports to cross-check our sample against.

This review follows the desk's retesting policy. If the seller changes materials, measurements, or the published size chart, we re-test the same way and update the score only after repeating the same steps.

See our published sources for the listing reference price and the seller-side item page. Our score is 4.2 out of 5: good, with the caveats above priced into it.

Color in the photos is more red than what showed up, mine is closer to a faded brick tone. Also the seller page still doesn't list the fabric percentages or the inseam, and I messaged twice with no reply. The shorts themselves are wearable but the listing needs work before I'd order another pair.

Ordered M-4XL range so I grabbed a 2XL expecting room. Waist is fine, but there is no stretch in the waistband itself, only in the fabric. Drawstring is the only thing keeping them up when I put my phone in the pocket. Decent for lounging, would not run in them.

$4.93?? I keep waiting for the catch lol. Wore them two days in a row at home in 90 degree heat and they stayed comfortable. Polyester-spandex blend feels slick, dries quick after a rinse. If you want thick cotton shorts this is not it, but for the price I'm not complaining.

Sizing is the real question here. I'm a 34 waist and went with L per the chart, but the fit is loose in a way that suggests I should have sized down. Also the listing never told me the inseam. Mine measured about 5 inches flat, but I'd want the seller to confirm that since other buyers may get a different batch.

Bought these in the navy option for a beach trip and honestly for $4.93 I expected way worse. The drawstring actually holds a knot, which is more than I can say for shorts I've paid triple for. They are THIN though. Like, you can see light through them if you hold them up. Fine for hot weather, not something I'd wear to the grocery store without checking in a mirror first.
